CURRENT EXHIBITION:

JUN. 20 - AUG. 15, 2025

ON/OFF THE WALL supports printmaking artists working in a variety of mediums and scale, traditional and non traditional including installation, three-dimensional, and larger scaled work. In support of the printmaking studio at Kimball Jenkins Estate.

This exhibition explores contemporary printmaking in the New England Region. Featuring monotypes, linocuts, cyanotypes, and sculptural prints this show exemplifies how artists are able to bring their work into new environments to push the medium into a deeper evolution. Each of the four exhibition spaces will feature themes dipping into geometric abstraction, nature, and perspective.

The exhibition includes works by ten printmakers across the Northeast including Annie Silverman, Mary Mead, William Mitchell, Rachel Gross, Chris Beneman, Anne McMillan, Aric Russom, Lynn Newcomb, Andrew Heath, and Mike Smoot

Installation View

Mike Smoot @doubledownpress and Aric Russom @arussom_art are paired in geometric fashion with their final images reflecting one another with their practice being radically different.

Both use layered techniques in printmaking. Smoot uses silkscreen, in combination with digital media, to translate imagery centered around themes of systems in a layered fashion, while Russom uses multi-block linocut to create their images.

Lynn Newcomb is a Vermont-based artist whose travels around the world have deepened her engagement with the medium of printmaking. Despite her global explorations, she consistently returns to her home studio, where she works with etching, monotype and lithography, as well as large-scale steel sculpture.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our opening this weekend to celebrate the start of ON/OFF The Wall at Kimball Jenkins Estate @kimballjenkins

We are so pleased to announce these have gone to a new home. These two pieces come from a 1930's body building magazine where the artist Andrew Heath @andrewheathfinearts brought them back to life with cyanotype, which is a process using a light-sensitive solution containing ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. When exposed to UV light, these chemicals react, creating a blue compound called Prussian blue, which forms the image. The unexposed solution washes away, leaving behind a white image on a blue background.

Russom is interested in the objects and environment we surround ourselves with, and particularly the play of interior and exterior which has drawn him to the window motif. The works featured in this exhibition are layered linocuts. Previously working in oil paint, his practice has evolved to focus on printmaking in the last 5 years.

Over the last 7 weeks we have been slowly melting ice cores by @hannahpmode that has slowly dripped into a basin below with some of the water from the Taku Glacier

This installation gives an understanding not only how her final cyanotypes are made, but also the importance of the subject at hand by exemplifying real time eroding.

Elizabeth Nelson's work reveals more about her process and relationship with the piece. Layering with intention the acrylic paint on yupo paper, which is a slick surface, she watches and continues to deepen her relationship with the work as she creates.

"Instead of being the solitary maker, the paint and the surface had their say too, and we continued on together to explore the image evolving with each level of the painting simultaneously revealing and camouflaging -- perhaps reflecting the changing weather of Iceland, or the changing stability of the earth underneath, or my deepening shifts of perception."

Mary Mead @marymeadprints is known for her print making, but her first medium she was drawn to was sculpture. These back-lit pieces in "Currents" highlights a series that started on the shores of the Bahamas when she was surfing. She would see waves of trash come in after cruise ships leave and started to feel the urge to collect and preserve these findings.

"After Valentine's Day there was just a wave of red that followed a cruise ships departure, they just left everything behind!" - Mead

This exhibition works to showcase the unseen impact of climate change on our planet and ecosystem. Please support this crucial work by viewing our works available in our link. Jackie Brown @j_a_c_k_i_e_b_r_o_w_n is an artist and Associate Professor of Art at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Her work is designed to be experienced both visually and spatially.

She currently serves in a leadership faculty roles with the Juneau Icefield Research Program, and has also been a visiting artist and/or instructor amongst many expeditions including locations such as Alaska, Chile, New Zealand, Canada, and more.

This image is of the Juneau Icefield Research Program that was started in 1946. Dedicated to education and science, and now in its 7th decade, the Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) continues to attract students and scientists from around the world studying the changing landscape of not only Taku which is featured in "Currents" , but over a thousand intersecting glaciers within this region.

Elizabeth Nelson @lizinvermont is a New York City born artist who now lives in rural Vermont. She often travels to residencies across the world to spend extended time in these spaces creating work

The series on display in "Currents" at PILLAR is from her time at her artist residency at Sim @simresidency in Iceland. Her process becomes open to the suggestions of the paint’s motion and interaction with the surface. The progression of time becomes important to the process. Each level of the painting simultaneously revealing and camouflaging–perhaps reflecting the changing weather of Iceland, or the changing stability of the earth underneath, or her deepening shifts of perception.

"I experienced an irresistible magnetic pull, a need to return for a longer time to paint what I saw and felt of the landscape and weather; to be a part of the life there."

They are dedicated to marine conservation in the northeast region. They regularly host clean up days at Hampton Beach and host whale watching tours where they do research on local pods they have been tracking since the early 2000s

This exhibition focuses on the current state of our ocean with a variety of mediums exemplifying climate change, using a variety of materials and techniques to highlight the fragile beauty of marine ecosystems with pieces that include time spent in the Bahamas, Alaska, Maine, New Hampshire, and Iceland. This all encompassing show expresses the reach of these issues past our own shorelines

Traveled from Juneau, Alaska this series is made within the waters of the Taku Glacier which was considered one of the only glaciers not melting until the past decade signifying the changes in our climate and environment

Hannah Perrine Mode @hannahpmode is an artist, educator, designer, and researcher working at the confluence of art and environmental science. Through making, teaching, and researching, she harnesses creative practices to deepen human connection to Earth systems and foster intersectional approaches to climate justice. Incorporating place-based making and cross-disciplinary exchange, her artworks and installations explore geologic forces, stewardship, and memory-keeping. Hannah works extensively with environmental and outdoor organizations to develop curricula, create programming, and teach art as a method of research, experimentation, and communication.

Join our live stream tomorrow Feb. 11 4 - 7 PM if you are interested in tuning in over the next 8 weeks we will be melting ice cores with samples from the Taku Glacier in Juneau, Alaska. Each piece represents the Annual Mass Balance of this tidal glacier since 1989 and collected into a basin live at PILLAR Gallery + Projects at 205 N. State St. Concord, NH.
